1979:  Joe Montana

The disgusting part about this is that it’s since been revealed that the Bears actually did have plans to draft Notre Dame quarterback Joe Montana in 1979.  He was the top guy on their board going into the 3rd round and they literally had started to write his name on the card when, inexplicably, GM Jim Finks balked.  He instead decided to draft a running back to provide depth behind Walter Payton, who was 25-years old and missed just one game in his career at that point.

Montana went to the 49ers shortly after that.  Chicago made the playoffs that season, but not because of their quarterback.  Two years later Montana led San Francisco to the first of what would be four Super Bowl titles in the 1980s.  He would also add insult to injury by knocking the Bears out of the playoffs twice.
