2016 NFL Draft: Likeliest Scenarios For Titans Trading Top Pick
By Erik Lambert
New Tennessee Titans GM Jon Robinson stated right off the bat that his team will certainly be open to the possibility of trading the #1 pick in the 2016 NFL draft this coming April.
Keep in mind this is something that hasn’t happened since 2001 when the San Diego Chargers dealt it to the Atlanta Falcons who wound up selecting Michael Vick. So it would be something to see to believe. Still it’s always a possibility.
The inevitable question is who would make that deal and which prospect could cause it? Here are three possible scenarios to consider.
#1: Dallas Cowboys trade up for Jared Goff
It’s important to keep these scenarios within reason. Chances are if the Titans are going to deal the #1 pick, it’ll be for a quarterback. The reason is obvious. Cleveland, who sits at #2, is all but guaranteed to take one. So if a team past #2 has eyes for the top quarterback, they’ll have to get above the Browns.
Of the teams within reasonable range and have the willingness to make such a move, not to mention the desire to, it would have to be the Dallas Cowboys. Jerry Jones has proven throughout his time there that he has no fear of bold trades. After watching how much his team deteriorated without Tony Romo, who turns 36 in April, it’s obvious that the Cowboys can no longer ignore quarterback.
Jared Goff is the consensus top name in the 2016 class. Putting him behind Romo to learn could set Dallas up for years to come and their roster is at such a point where they can afford the price it will take. Also, since they only sit at #4, the price it will take to move up won’t be quite as steep as it would be were they outside the top 5.
