Clemson Defense

Kevin Dodd (DE)

With Clemson’s most prolific defensive lineman Shaq Lawson battling injuries, the Tigers’ other DE needs to step up. Lawson, a likely first-round pick, has 10.5 sacks and 23.5 tackles for a loss on the season. Dodd doesn’t receive nearly as much hype, but he’s not far behind with nine sacks and 18.5 tackles for a loss.

Dodd certainly stepped up in Lawson’s absence against Oklahoma in the Orange Bowl. He finished the semifinal contest with 3.5 tackles for a loss. The matchup between Lawson and Alabama left tackle Cam Robinson will receive much of the attention, while Dodd will look to make an impact against right tackle Dominick Jackson. Dodd has the advantage in this one and will be Clemson’s best hope of getting to Jake Coker.

Jayron Kearse (SS)

In order for Clemson to contain Heisman winner Derrick Henry, the defense will need to load the box. Fortunately for the Tigers, they have enough confidence in their cornerbacks to do so. When Henry gets past the front line, it will be up to Jayron Kearse to prevent the big gain.

Kearse’s struggles in the run game this season hve primarily been the result of taking poor angles to the ball carrier. That shouldn’t be as big of an issue against a power runner like Henry, but he still needs to be in position to make a play. When Kearse is in position, he’s physical enough to take down Henry on his own. If he gets out of position, Henry will be off to the races.
