Louisiana State University has a reputation of being “Defensive Back University”
Based on the latest prospects who have called Baton Rouge home (Tyrann Mathieu, Patrick Peterson, Eric Reid) the argument can be made.
While some may disagree, the school has a respectable case. In this upcoming draft, CB Tre’Davious White has high hopes of having his name included on the list of NFL defensive backs to rock the gold and purple.
Here is the scouting report on LSU cornerback Tre’Davious White.
Strengths: Listed at 5’11 but looks bigger on film….Possess good NFL size….Solid footwork, able to backpedal effectively while maintaining fluidity in his hips……Was often assigned the opponents #1 receiver and shadows him….Physical corner, especially in press-man coverage…..Able to keep up with most receivers with his good speed….Used as a punt returner during his sophomore and junior seasons (45 returns, 502 yards, two TDs)…..Able to use his length on pass breakups….Been a starter for LSU for all three of his seasons in Baton Rouge.

Weaknesses: White looks the part but doesn’t always “play” the part….Good size corner but it’s obvious he needs to improve his strength…..Not as great of a tackler as he should be, tends to tackle around the shoulders….White has the ability to come up in run support but is not always assertive….Struggles to get off blocks at times…..A little too aggressive beyond five yards of the LOS, will lead to a number of defensive pass interference calls.
Bottom line: White is a good corner and will be for a long time, IF he cleans up the weaknesses. Based on the tape, White may never become a #1 corner, but that doesn’t mean he can’t come in and become a good #2 corner to enhance a secondary. White’s game in particular vs. Ole Miss WR Laquan Treadwell showed some good and some bad. I wasn’t a fan of how he tried to tackle the physical Treadwell around the shoulders on two different occasions and wound up giving up a first down and a touchdown on those occurrences.
He has the raw tools and skills to be much better down the line. What is important is that a team doesn’t take a chance on him with hopes of being a shutdown corner immediately. All in all, the potential is there. Yet, with that potential must come patience.
