Stuck in the shadow of Heisman-finalist Christian McCaffery, Barry Sanders Jr is looking to make a big move. The son of NFL Hall of Famer and all-time great Barry Sanders has been granted his release from Stanford to any school outside of the PAC-12. Among Sanders options include his father’s alma mater Oklahoma State, a member of the Big 12 conference.

Sanders Jr. finished his 2015 campaign with 315 rushing yards and four touchdowns. The breakout season by McCaffery put the former four-star recruit on the sidelines for the majority of the season. When the young Sanders originally committed to Stanford in 2012, he had 11 other offers in hand, including Oklahoma State.

Sanders Jr would replace Oklahoma State’s current starter Chris Carson if he were to transfer there. Carson, a former three-star recruit, rushed for 517 yards and four touchdowns in 2015.  The three remaining running backs on the Cowboys depth chart from 2015 rushed for a combined 720 yards and seven touchdowns. The team currently has two “hard commits” from three-star all-purpose backs.

Oklahoma State Head Coach Mike Gundy said following a 28 point blowout loss to Ole Miss that his New Years resolution would be to “get a running back.”

A Heisman trophy winner, Barry Sanders Sr. set both Oklahoma State and NCAA records during his three years with the Cowboys. Sander Sr’s NCAA single-season record for all-purpose yardage (3,250 yards) was broken by his son’s teammate, Christian McCaffery, earlier this year.

McCaffery finished second in the 2015 Heisman Trophy voting to Alabama running back Derrick Henry. He finished the season with 2,019 rushing yards and an additional 645 receiving.

Sanders Jr. will certainly have some time to evaluate his options regarding transfers. National Signing Day for high school recruits is typically the first Wednesday in February, which could help Sanders get an idea of where he could start.
