Tennessee Titans: Titans have the top open job in football
The Tennessee Titans are searching for a GM and a head coach, and they should have their pick of the litter — the Titans lay claim to the best open job in football thanks to two key components…
Is there a better job in football than the one the Tennessee Titans are offering prospective GM and head coach candidates?
In my opinion, there isn’t.
Despite the fact that two-time Super Bowl champion Eli Manning is without a coach, the Browns are once again without a coach, the 49ers and Dolphins jobs are available, and plenty of other intriguing jobs league-wide, none would entice me more than the one in Tennessee.
The Titans are currently trying to fill the vacated general manager position, and they’ve started their search with Baltimore Ravens assistant GM Eric DeCosta, who has spent every single one of his 18 years in the NFL with the Ravens.
DeCosta has been coveted by teams in the NFL for years now, and the Titans simply reaching out and asking for an interview is an indicator of how confident they are that their job is the best job in football right now, college or pro.
Hypothetically, if the Titans were able to land DeCosta, it would add a third ‘home run’ component to this job opening for any prospective head coach coming in, and whatever staff he hires. The other two components?
What other NFL job opening offers a young quarterback with as much upside as former Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota in addition to the top overall pick in the NFL Draft?
None. I set you up there.
The Titans are armed with an elite young QB prospect and the top pick in the draft, and they are not without talent elsewhere on the roster.
As a team that ‘earned’ the right to pick first overall in the draft, there is plenty of work to be done with this Titans team. They have needs all over the place but they have a chance this offseason with plenty of cap space and the best pick in every round of the draft to make a significant dent in things, and whatever head coach is brought in will have a top flight young QB with which to work.
Mariota’s development could speed up the recovery of this franchise, and he needs the right head coach/offensive coordinator/quarterback coach to lead that charge. Could that be Chip Kelly, or will he even have an NFL job next season?
I don’t think I have all the right answers as far as the Titans are concerned, but I do think this is the best job in the league and in football in general. Any head coach or GM candidate should be thrilled about the opportunity to coach Marcus Mariota and the top pick in the up-coming draft, and the Titans also have plenty of money to be spent in free agency.
It looks like they are set up for long-term success, they just need the right guys pulling the triggers. In my opinion, they should have their pick of anyone they want.
