Robert Griffin III Not a Fit for Chip Kelly’s Eagles

The name Robert Griffin III has been lost in the midst of the NFL season, but as the offseason approaches the former number two overall pick is getting some attention once again. After being benched for Kirk Cousins and Colt McCoy at the beginning of the season, Griffin has become an afterthought for Redskins fans as the team fights for an NFC East Championship. It would be the teams first since 2012, when a young rookie quarterback took the league by storm.

For Griffin, the situation in Washington D.C. is probably the worst outcome he could have imagined. Going from a Heisman Trophy winner to the second overall pick to a third string benchwarmer was not in his mind.

As the offseason comes closer, people are starting to wonder what the future holds for Robert Griffin III. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport listed a slew of potentially quarterback-needy teams looking towards the 2016 season.

The team that probably jumps out the most is the Philadelphia Eagles. Chip Kelly has not had a mobile quarterback in his offense since Michael Vick and current quarterback Sam Bradford is on a one year deal. Sounds like a great fit, doesn’t it?

Wrong. Kelly has eradicated locker-room distractions since he arrived in Philadelphia, including DeSean Jackson, LeSean McCoy, and Cary Williams. Robert Griffin III is known not just for his play on the field, but his dangerous presence in NFL locker-rooms. The old narrative of “RGME” still lingers as Griffin watches Kirk Cousins lead the Redskins into the playoff picture.

Chip Kelly heavily preaches the importance of culture in his organization. The addition of someone who should be a selfless leader is the last thing the former Ducks coach would want. Not to mention the media in Philadelphia would rip Griffin to shreds and kill off any confidence he still holds. It’s a disaster waiting to happen and it’s not one Chip Kelly is risking as his rollercoaster tenure in Philadelphia comes into the end of its third year. While he has the legs, Griffin does not have the accuracy to stay consistent in the Chip Kelly system.

Kelly is better off signing Sam Bradford to a cap-friendly contract and drafting a mid-round quaterback to groom incase Bradford goes down once again.

As for Robert Griffin III, he’s better off going to a team with a veteran he can learn under and a media market that won’t pester him. Denver would have been an interesting choice if not for Brock Osweiler’s emergence. Kansas City and New Orleans are also places that fit those criteria. For Griffin it’s all about learning the game and getting healthy. Being thrown into the fire with the Eagles is probably the worst thing that could happen as he tries to resurrect his NFL career.
