Virginia Tech has found its replacement for a legend. While it will be hard to step into the shoes of Frank Beamer, who coached at Virginia Tech for nearly 30 years, the program believes they’ve found a worthy replacement. A hot name around the coaching circles for some of college footballs most illustrious programs, University of Memphis Head Coach Justin Fuente will step in next season as the leader of the Hokies program.

Beamer announced his retirement on November 1st, but will remain at the program as a Special Assistant to the Athletic Director.

The 39-year old Fuente has a career coaching record of 26-23 since taking over the Memphis Head Coach position in 2012. He also spent time at Murray State and TCU as either an offensive coordinator or position coach. He is also 1-0 in Bowl games as a head coach with the Tigers. Fuente won the AAC Coach of the Year last season, cementing his name as a candidate for future, more prominent head coaching jobs.

Head Coach Frank Beamer leaves the Hokies program in fitting fashion today, as the Hokies pulled out a victory against Virginia by a final score of 23-20. They will be bowl eligible for the 23rd straight season; a true testament to Beamer’s legendary coaching career. He finishes with over 270 career wins and 10 bowl wins in his coaching tenure.

Memphis’s football program has seen a revival over the past couple seasons under Fuente. They spent much of the season amongst the top teams in the AP and College Football Playoff poll rankings with a 9-3 record and carrying a bowl eligibility status.
