With the firing of GM Martin Mayhew, everything is thrown into an unknown fog regarding the Detroit Lions and their future. Topping the list of question, aside from the fate of head coach Jim Caldwell is what the team plans to do with quarterback Matthew Stafford. He is currently in the midst of one of his worst seasons as a starter. This after a Pro Bowl season in 2014, during which he led the Lions to the playoffs.
At age 27 he is in his physical prime but the lack of success in the postseason and his ongoing inconsistency has likely worn out the patience of team ownership. This could lead to a big change next off-season, starting with the possibility of trading him. What teams around the league might bit on that?
Denver Broncos
John Elway is doing everything in his power to send Peyton Manning out a winner this season. Whether it happens or not though, salary cap concerns likely make 2015 the final year the future Hall of Famer is under center for the Denver Broncos. With him gone, who does the team turn to? Brock Osweiler? He’s a free agent next year and was a product of a different coaching staff.
Trading for a former Pro Bowl player in his prime sounds exactly like the kind of aggressive move Elway would make. He knows how to make quarterbacks successful and Denver has a good environment to help Stafford rebound.
