Baylor QB Seth Russell injured: Impact and what’s next

It was another Saturday stroll in the park for QB Seth Russell and the Baylor Bears, who were cruising to another big win over Iowa State when all of a sudden, things took a turn for the worst.

Russell, who has 29 passing touchdowns and six rushing touchdowns on the season, took an option play off the right tackle and stuck his head down to prepare for contact. That hasn’t ever been a good idea, and for Russell, it was especially costly. He would leave the game with a neck injury, and it would later be revealed that he has a broken bone in his neck.

This is a big loss for Baylor, who appeared well on its way to running the table this season barring some crazy setback, such as the one they suffered on Saturday.

The good news for Baylor fans is this — whoever has taken snaps at the quarterback position has excelled and been able to score a ton of points. That shouldn’t change for Jarrett Stidham, who has a bright future in college football regardless of when it should start. Here’s his recruiting profile from Rivals.com

As you can see, Stidham is about as good as it gets when it comes to college football recruits, and playing as a true freshman in this offense, he’s been pretty great.

In what essentially amounts to one game’s worth of work over the course of this season, Stidham has completed 24-of-28 passes with six touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s taken three sacks but also has completed nearly 86 percent of his pass attempts. That’s not a bad resume to start your collegiate career with, and Baylor will have a bye week to get him ready for a road game at Kansas State on November 5th.

The dual-threat high school All-American has also rushed for a touchdown this season, so in limited time — not to mention as Russell builds a Heisman-worthy resume — he’s been able to put together some really nice numbers for this absolutely ridiculous Baylor offense.

And oh yeah, it helps to have that guy Corey Coleman out there too along with Shock Linwood and the rest of this star studded cast of characters.

Hopefully Seth Russell’s injury is something he can come back from fully yet this season. You hate to see star players have seasons cut short for any reason, but he was enjoying some special success. Here’s to a quick recovery and good news from doctors for Russell.
