#5: The Waiting Game
- No desired QB is available
- Draft at other positions through first two days
- Scan for possible sleepers in round 4-6
- Stick with Jay Cutler in 2016
- Look to 2017
Best Projected Option: Nate Sudfeld (Indiana)
This would be the absolute last resort. Sometimes the ball just doesn’t bounce the right way to take a quarterback. One lesson teams have learned over the years is to never force the issue at the position. It’s best to let the board fall the right way and hope you get lucky.
Ryan Pace has shown he will not reach for players he deems unworthy of the pick. Quarterback is no exception. If the right guy isn’t there in the first three rounds, the Bears may decide to place their priorities elsewhere and maintain the status quo with Cutler. He has several years left on his contract, so he’s not going anywhere and he has plenty of experience and ability.
The team could opt to go for a project option who exhibits upside. This way they can at least secure a quality third-stringer or even backup. At best they may hit the lottery and find their starter. Nate Sudfeld, at 6’6″, has the prototypical size with the arm and passing mechanics of a pro.
As with most college quarterbacks, it’s about whether he can improve his decision-making and speed up the clock in his head.
