#4:  Long-Term Plan

  • No desired QB is available
  • Draft at other position in 1st round
  • Make a move for developmental option in 2nd-3rd range
  • Stick with Jay Cutler in 2016

Best Projected Option:  Cardale Jones (Ohio State)

Teams have had success before when taking quarterbacks in the 2nd or 3rd rounds.  Russsell Wilson, Derek Carr and Joe Montana are just a few examples.  However, it doesn’t happen often.  The later a draft goes, the more likely the quarterback taken will be a bust.  Still, if a team is willing to be patient they could bring in a high-end talent to develop.

That would be Cardale Jones.  Based on pure physical ability, he has every tool in the box:  size, mobility, toughness, strength and a live arm but also touch.  The problem is he’s very inexperienced and it shows in his progression as a passer.  He’s not ready for the pros.  Not by a long shot.

Now after a year or two of sitting the bench and getting some hard coaching on the offense?  That could be his ticket to unlocking his vast potential, and in the meantime the Bears can ride out the last of the string with Jay Cutler.
