Corey Davis (WR – Western Michigan) vs. Ohio State

There are a few players in this game who need to step up, but none more so than Western Michigan wide receiver Corey Davis. The last time Western Michigan was in the national spotlight, Davis caught 10 passes for 154 yards and a touchdown against Michigan State in the season opener. His performance helped keep Western Michigan in the game. Three weeks later, the Broncos will once again take on a team from the Big Ten Conference.

In Week 1, Davis was unstoppable. It didn’t matter who the Spartans used to cover him, Davis found a way to get open. Even when tightly covered or interfered with (defensive pass interference was called on his touchdown grab), he displayed a very good ability to haul in contested passes.

Since the opener, Davis has not maintained a high level of play. Against Georgia Southern and Murray State, he had a total of eight receptions for 155 yards. This must change against Ohio State. The Buckeyes have a tremendous pass defense this season, and it’s led by cornerback Eli Apple. Whether Apple is covering Davis or Daniel Braverman, scouts will be paying close attention. Apple hasn’t allowed a catch through three games, so even an adequate performance by Davis could elevate his stock.

While all the media focus will be on Cardale Jones as he tries to keep his job as Ohio State’s starting quarterback, I’ll be watching Davis. He gained a little buzz after the Michigan State game, now it’s time for him to prove his worth.
