NFL Draft Stock Down: Offense
Leon Allen (RB – Western Kentucky)
While Western Kentucky QB Brandon Doughty’s stock is going up, the same can’t be said for the Hilltoppers’ running back. Unfortunately for Allen, his season, and possibly college career, may have ended last Thursday.
While attempting to catch a screen pass, Allen was hit low and his knees gave out. Despite being a senior, it’s likely the NCAA would approve a medical redshirt if Allen applies for one. While he has plenty of time to decide, Allen could also opt for the NFL Draft.
The play brought back memories of Willis McGahee when he played for the Miami Hurricanes. While that injury looked every bit as painful, McGahee was able to fully recover and play 11 seasons in the NFL. Now Allen isn’t a first-round prospect like McGahee was, but hopefully he can make a full recovery and compete for playing time at the next level.
Dak Prescott (QB – Mississippi State)
Dak Prescott threw for 335 yards against LSU, but it wasn’t enough to lead Mississippi State to a victory. Despite the stat line, this was not a good game for Prescott in terms of his NFL future.
While his pocket presence and lack of accuracy in tight windows will frustrate NFL scouts, there were two plays in particular that indicate he won’t be a starting QB in the NFL. The first actually came following a touchdown pass. Attempting a two-point conversion which would have tied the game, Prescott threw well behind a wide open RB in the flat. The second play occurred with eight seconds left. On the edge of field goal range, Prescott allowed the play clock to expire and push the Bulldogs back five yards. A QB who isn’t accurate and struggles to manage the game in pressure situations better find a new position if they hope to play in the NFL. That’s likely the case with Prescott who could move into an H-back role.
Cardale Jones (QB – Ohio State)
Cardale Jones has gone from potential first-round pick to potential benchwarmer. In his first career start at home, Jones struggled against Hawaii. He completed 12 of his 18 passes, but only four of those completions were thrown beyond the line of scrimmage. With J.T. Barrett on his heels, another performance like this one could signal Jones’ return to the bench.
Leonte Carroo (WR – Rutgers)
After being suspended for the first half of Rutgers’ opener, Leonte Carroo returned to gain 129 yards and score three touchdowns in the second half. Although he only gained 52 yards in Week 2, his stock is plummeting for another reason.
A day after the Week 2 loss to Washington State, the school announced Carroo had been suspended indefinitely. It was later reported that Carroo was arrested and charged with simple assault in a domestic violence case. As a result of recent events, the NFL has been unforgiving when it comes to domestic violence. A conviction would likely mean a tough road to the NFL.
