Redshirt Senior Everett Golson has been named the Florida State Seminoles starting quarterback after a lengthy positional battle with junior Sean Maquire. Head Coach Jimbo Fisher officially announced the decision today, naming the Notre Dame transfer the offensive leader for the team at a press conference earlier this evening. Golson will be taking over for Jameis Winston, who left for the NFL after last years tough postseason loss to Oregon in the Rose Bowl.

The Seminoles will attempt to return to the college football playoffs for a third consecutive season and open their season against Texas State.

Despite missing the 2013 season due to an academic suspension, Golson has shown immense talent as a quarterback in two full seasons. In his return to football, Golson threw 29 touchdowns and over 3400 yards. On the other hand, he did throw a total of 14 interceptions and was sacked 27 times.

"“He has all of the gifts. He can throw, he can run, he’s a competitor, he learns well. He’s getting a grasp of what we’re doing and the consistency level – he has very good demeanor. You can tell his experience level (is high) and his demeanor and the guys respond well to it.”"

Everett is mostly known for his mobility and velocity, but he still has a lot to work on. The young quarterback threw at least one interception in the final nine games of the Fighting Irish’s regular season, showing a need to work on his accuracy. If he wants a chance to impress NFL scouts, that’ll be one of his biggest marks to prove on.

Also announced by Jimbo Fisher was that Corey Martinez has earned the starting center job. Martinez was redshirted last year and will be replacing Cam Erving on the offensive line for the Seminoles. Yesterday, the team announced running back Dalvin Cook would not be missing any time due to suspension, which is great news for both Cook and the program.
