Ohio State is a defense loaded with top flight talent. Eli Apple last year quietly put together an impressive season. What I noticed immediately with Apple is again his man to man coverage skills. These top three cornerbacks all excel in man coverage. When watching Apple I found that he is much better in press coverage then off ball. A few times I saw Apple stumble during his break when he is giving the receiver cushion but when he’s pressed and engaged he’s nearly impossible to beat. Against Alabama, Blake Sims had to check down to his running back because his main target Amari Cooper was held in check by Apple. He’s only a redshirt sophomore and can improve mightily on some facets of his game but his potential alone puts him in the top three. Apple is also not afraid to mix it up a little but in the run game which is encouraging to see now a days from cover corners. Alabama and Oregon did not test him at all which is saying something.

Apple is a wild card to watch this year. He could propel himself over Sutton with another good season and if he improves on some things. He could be a legitimate lock down cornerback for Ohio State this year which would make that defense even scarier. With a good season Apple will be a first round pick without a doubt and be a true lock down cornerback needed in the NFL now.
