Defense

Chicago Bears

After finished 30th in the league two years-in-a-row, why would anybody think Chicago is in store for sudden surge of good defense this season?  Well aside from a number of quality personnel additions like Antrel Rolle, Pernell McPhee and rookie Eddie Goldman; this team also got a huge boost in the coaching department.

Vic Fangio is one of the best, most experienced defensive coordinators in the NFL.  He’s fresh off a successful run in San Francisco and has a reputation for creativity with scheme.  No doubt he is a massive upgrade over the departed Mel Tucker, and that should lead to a big leap in production for the Bears.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Lovie Smith never gets enough credit for his ability as a defensive coach.  He’s built some of the best seen in the past decade.  Last season was his first in Tampa Bay, so it’s clear there would be some adjustment period for his players.

However, the season clearly showed marked progress.  After giving up more than 23 points four times in six games to start the year, the Bucs only did that twice in the remaining 10 to finish.  With a number of quiet but good additions to the roster this unit is poised for a breakout.
