NFL Fantasy Football Profile: Tony Romo of Dallas Cowboys

facebooktwitterreddit

Like every quarterback in Dallas Cowboys history, Tony Romo is going to have his critics.  Though he remains in pursuit of that elusive championship, the fact is he will likely retire as the most prolific passer in franchise history.  Not bad for a former undrafted free agent out of Eastern Illinois.  So where does the 35-year old stand on the NFL fantasy football landscape?

2014 Production:

  • 3,705 yards passing
  • 61 yards rushing
  • 34 touchdowns
  • 9 interceptions
  • 266.30 fantasy points

Age is certainly something to be concerned about with Romo.  Though several quarterbacks in their mid 30s have had great success in the past, it’s never a guarantee.  That’s especially true for Romo who has endured his fair share of injuries over the past few seasons.  The good news is he may not have to worry about dealing with too much pressure as the Cowboys have assembled their best offensive line since that great unit of the 1990s.

What likely has some fantasy owners concerned is the state of Romo’s weaponry.  Jason Witten is also getting old, having turned 33 in May.  Dez Bryant has made no contract headway with the organization and is threatening to sit out regular season games until it’s resolved.  On top of that, leading rusher DeMarco Murray is gone.

On the one hand that’s good news because it could force Romo to throw more often, hence more points chances but it also could lead to more turnovers and hits from defenses.  The entire reasoning behind commiting to the run game was to limit Romo’s mistakes and keep him health.

Thus the conundrum.  Will the Dallas Cowboys maintain their current format of offense without Murray?  Will Bryant suit up Week 1?  How much does Witten have left in the tank?  These are all question that make the fantasy situation of Tony Romo murky.
