NFL Fantasy Football Spotlight: Jay Cutler
By Erik Lambert
Most fans are too busy trying to predict the career fate of Jay Cutler in 2015 that they’ve lost focus on where he stands in the NFL fantasy football landscape. With a brand new front office and coaching staff above him, his job security is more tenuous than ever. This has led to the belief that at the first sign of trouble the Chicago Bears will do everything possible to get out from under his massive contract.
Still, signs indicate they are set in their direction at least for this season, which means Cutler is the guy that fantasy owners should expect to start. So who or what are they getting if they decide to draft him?
2014 Production:
- 3,812 yards passing
- 191 yards rushing
- 30 touchdowns
- 18 interceptions
- 255.58 fantasy points
Watching the Bears careen to an ugly 5-11 finish made it hard to believe that Cutler was actually pretty productive on the fantasy front. In fact, he outproduced Matthew Stafford, who went to the Pro Bowl last year along with a host of other prominent names like Antonio Brown and Arian Foster.
This despite the fact that as the year wore on he was at odds with then head coach Marc Trestman and offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer as well as his best receiver Brandon Marshall being injured constantly. Trestman and his staff are gone now, and Cutler finally has the chance to work with a guy he’s wanted to for years in Adam Gase. The man is considered one of the brighter offensive minds in the NFL today and his success in Denver can’t be overlooked.
Even with Marshall gone too Cutler still has an array of Pro Bowl weaponry around him with Alshon Jeffery, Martellus Bennett and Matt Forte. That doesn’t even include highly-touted rookie Kevin White and speedy slot specialist Eddie Royal. Altogether this may be the most talented offense Cutler has ever played on.
If Gase is the prolific play caller many believe him to be, then all it will take is decent pass protection up front and this could be a career year for Jay in a Bears uniform. He can still run, still has a gun for an arm and by all accounts is well-adjusted family man who is embracing responsibility. Anything is possible.
