Are there players who are truly untouchable? Most Dallas Cowboys fans would say that about wide receiver Dez Bryant, who has made his case for being the best in pro football. However, after seeing New Orleans so willingly deal Jimmy Graham, it was a clear reminder that in the right situation, an NFL trade is always possible.
Bryant, for all his brilliance on the field is making it difficult for the Cowboys to lock him up long-term. Money shouldn’t be an issue here, but there comes a time when a franchise must be responsible.
Common sense says a deal gets worked out at some point, but this is the NFL. Crazy stuff happens ALL the time. There are plenty of reasons to think the Dallas Cowboys would consider dealing Bryant.
- Can’t come together in negotiations
- Locker room divide
- Massive return in compensation from the trade
- Save salary cap space
- College football is rich in wide receivers
- Team has a strong history of drafting them
The bottom line is Dez Bryant is a great player, but he’s not greater than the Cowboys. Jerry Jones and his front office know that. They showed a willingness to make the tough decision this offseason already when they let DeMarco Murray, the leading rusher in pro football go for nothing in return. Every player has a point of no return in Dallas. It’s just a question of how far it goes.
Bryant has a long leash because of his age and his recent impact on the team, but the more he pushes, the more the Cowboys may be forced into an action nobody sees coming.
