5. South Carolina Gamecocks

Two seasons ago, it seemed like South Carolina was starting to position themselves as a consistent national power.  Now, after a 7-6 season and question marks littering the roster, it seem like they are right back where they started.  They lost quarterback Dylan Thompson, who quietly passed for over 3,500 yards and 26 touchdowns last season.  They will also be replacing their top rusher in Mike Davis, along with two key offensive lineman in AJ Cann and Corey Robinson.

Connor Mitch is slotted to replace Thompson under center.  Steve Spurrier is hoping that nothing happens to Mitch, as there isn’t much behind him on the depth chart.  Mitch does have one thing going for him; that’s all-SEC receiver Pharoh Cooper.  Cooper racked up over 1,100 yards and nine touchdowns last season and will act as a security blanket for Connor Mitch this season.  Cooper will lead the receiver group in 2015, as the Gamecocks turn over some new talent below him.

Brandon Wilds will be the feature back this season and play a huge role in the offense.  Wilds averaged over five yards per carry last season running behind Mike Davis.

Skai Moore will lead the defense in 2015, just like he did last year.  Moore has led the Gamecocks in tackles for the past two seasons.  The Dixon brothers (Gerald and Gerald Jr.) will have to step up along the defensive front.  South Carolina was 105th nationally against the run last season, ranking 92nd in defense as a whole.

South Carolina’s secondary is another question that they likely do not know the answer to. Safety Isaiah Johnson, a Kansas transfer, will likely step in and have an immediate impact. Chris Lammons and Rico McWilliams will likely man the corner positions.

South Carolina will once again play a tough non-conference schedule. They will take on North Carolina in Charlotte and host Clemson at the end of the season, per tradition. Their yearly bout with Georgia is always a highlight of the early season.  They will have to play between the hedges this season. The Gamecocks will also have to play Tennessee and Missouri on the road.
