Personality quirks not withstanding, teams rarely pass up the opportunity to grab a quality pass rusher. Bruce Irvin is probably counting on that with 2016 NFL free agency in his sights.
- Age: 27
- 93 tackles
- 16.5 sacks
- 3 interceptions
- 3 forced fumbles
- 2 touchdowns
- Super Bowl champion
It’s really hard to get noticed on a defense that is as talented as the one the Seattle Seahawks have put together. Bruce Irvin has found ways though, partially with his play and partially with his volatile temperament on the field. There is no disputing he has skill as a pass rusher. The funny part is 2014 wasn’t the greatest year for him in that department. In fact, Pro Football Focus rated him far higher as a run blocker (+12.3 to -1.2).
Part of it may have been him not playing often enough. Irvin was used most often as a situational player, logging 709 snaps for the season. Seven players on the Seahawks defense logged more. Maybe it was just the system he was in or fear that he couldn’t handle full-time duties due to his size (6’3″, 248 lbs).
Whatever the reason, rumors have circulated the Seahawks may have plans to move on from him in 2016. First was the trade rumors about him going to Atlanta. Then there is the inescapable fact that Seattle refused to pick up the 5th year option on his contract. Combine that with his history of problems from substance abuse suspensions to his very public ejection in the final seconds of the Super Bowl.
The question then becomes which teams will be willing to ignore those risks and give him the raise he’s looking for?
