Florida State DB Jalen Ramsey: Early NFL Draft Scouting
The 2016 NFL Draft is ways away but scouting talent for this upcoming draft is a year long process. Florida State was incredibly inconsistent last year despite only losing one game but Jalen Ramsey showed to be one of the top defensive play makers in college football.

Jalen Ramsey was as dominate of a player as anyone in college football last season. Ramsey was voted as a First Team All-American and was also named to the All-ACC First Team at the safety position. He will convert to cornerback this season due to the void left by Ronald Darby and P.J. Williams but Ramsey best projects as a safety at the next level in my eyes.
Ramsey is a 6’1 204 pound safety who causes havoc everywhere on the field. He is as versatile as it gets for the safety position. He has the ability to cover wide receivers, play in the box as a linebacker and blitz from anywhere on the field. He’s that good of an athlete. If you watched any type of Florida State football this past season you probably heard the name Jalen Ramsey consistently.
His film against Miami is a must watch and make sure to click on the links below to watch his impact plays.
Observations
- Ramsey’s game against Miami was one of the best and most dominant prospect videos I have seen in some time. He was everywhere on the field, blitzing from multiple spots on the field, forcing fumbles and making interceptions. In the game against Miami, Ramsey had one interception, four pass deflections, a forced fumble and four times he entered the backfield and disrupted Brad Kaaya’s throws.
- One thing I love about Ramsey is his intensity and energy on the field. He is a leader on the field, the ten other defenders feed off of his energy. He will let players on opposing teams know when he makes an impact play and is not afraid to show his emotion.
- He has elite athleticism, he can do it all on the field. One day Ramsey hopes to enter the Olympics and win a gold medal in the long jump competition. He showed off his athleticism when he made an excellent deflection in the backfield here. He also has the ability to keep up with any wide receiver. When assigned to him, he was on the hip of Phillip Dorsett and even intercepted a pass intended for him.
- When Jalen Ramsey blitzes his present is felt, he is almost unstoppable for a offensive tackle to block when he has a full head of steam. Plays like this here shows how lethal Ramsey is when he blitzes against any offensive line. Quarterback Brad Kaaya was rattled all second half thanks to Ramsey’s disruption in the backfield.
- His coverage skills are also sensational. He was able to keep up with most receivers I watched him up against. Ramsey was able to keep up with one of the fastest players in college football and did not let him impact the game. Here, Ramsey makes an incredible diving deflection when covering Dorsett.
- Ramsey is also a secure tackler, he can stop on a dime and square his shoulders to any ball carrier and bring them down. A perfect example of his tackling ability is his play on Duke Johnson on a running back swing pass.
- Did I mention he even blocks extra points? This man does it all.
