The lack of progress on an extension raises an interesting question regarding Eli Manning and his stance in 2016 NFL free agency. Will the New York Giants pay up?
- Age: 34
- 4,410 yards
- 31 touchdowns
- 18 turnovers
- Three Pro Bowls
- Two Super Bowl titles
Quarterbacks with the accomplishments of Manning don’t come around very often in the NFL, so it fortifies the idea that even at age 34 the Giants can ill-afford to let him even sniff free agency. For a time he was in danger, going through a continued problem of turning the ball over far too much. He finished 2013 with more interceptions than touchdowns and was in danger of doing so again in 2014 before he finished the season strong.
Now things are looking up. His weaponry is loading up, spearheaded by Odell Beckham Jr. and a mending Victor Cruz. The offensive system is in place and ready to grow in the second year with coordinator Ben McAdoo. A good season and a playoff berth would all but guarantee Manning goes nowhere next year.
Still, crazier things have happened. If his brother Peyton could become a free agent despite all he did in Indianapolis, not even Eli is infallible despite his two rings. Smart money says the Giants will withhold any final deal until they’re certain Manning isn’t in danger of regressing or reverting to his turnover-prone ways.
Likeliest Outcome: Signs extension before end of regular season
