College Football Notebook: Wide Receiver

facebooktwitterreddit

As part of our growing college football coverage, I will be sharing some of my personal scouting notes on 2016 wide receiver prospects throughout the football offseason. I hope this gives fans a chance to see what we see when we’re scouting players, and gives you an opportunity to join in.

Today I will be sharing my notes on some of the big-time wide receivers across college football: Leonte Carroo, Alonzo Russell, Josh Doctson, and Tyler Boyd. These are the exact words out of my personal scouting notebook I take when I watch tape on each of these players. Hope you enjoy!

Josh Doctson – TCU, RS Senior

GAME WATCHED – MINNESOTA, 2014

More from NFL Mocks

Quick off the line

Great over the shoulder and one-handed touchdowns in this game

Crisp routes

Multiple leaping catches

Blocking needs work

Versatile route tree

Run after the catch needs work

Draws penalties on deep routes

Needs to attack the ball more often

AJ Green like catches

One of my favorite wide receivers in college football

Leonte Carroo – Rutgers, Senior

  • 6’1, good height
  • GAME WATCHED – WASHINGTON STATE, 2014
  • Has separation speed out of the snap
  • Beautiful early touchdown
  • Breakaway speed not as fast as desired
  • Blocking is average at best, lack of effort?
  • Doesn’t create plays for the quarterback, leading to turnovers
  • Holds on after jarring hits
  • Prodominantly plays on the outside
  • Not a talker on the field, does his job and gets out of situations
  • Knows how to get separation with a good inside move on defensive backs

Alonzo Russell – Toledo, RS Senior

  • 6’4, great height
  • GAME WATCHED – CENTRAL MICHIGAN, 2014
  • Breaks ankle tackles
  • Mindful of the sideline
  • Fights for yards
  • Quick off the line
  • Doesn’t get great separation
  • Blocking needs work
  • Control through the catch
  • Excellent fade routes
  • Plays outside and the slot

Tyler Boyd – Pittsburgh, Junior

  • GAME WATCHED – GEORGIA TECH, 2014
  • Ball security lacking
  • Catches screen plays well
  • Started returning kicks and punts Junior season
  • Blocking not effective
  • Turns head on downfield touchdowns
  • Finds the soft spots in defense
  • Attacks the ball
  • Makes multiple sec catches
  • Picks the ball in traffic
  • Needs work overall, but a one of the better wide receivers in next years draft
