player. 10. Alright Texans, what’s going on here? First three picks were out of the park, why go straight to another receiver here? There were better values on the board, and more needs. There was good value in the secondary and even on the defensive line. That is not a knock against Mumphery, he is a serviceable receiver, but he is not a day one starter by any means and will have to work just to make the roster. He most likely would have been available in the next round or even the seventh. But on the plus side, it does give extra depth at the position, so there is a silver lining.
Grade D+
. Wide Receiver. Michigan State. Keith Mumphery. 175

South Florida. Reshard Cliett. 211. player. 10. Okay, much better pick. Fits a need and has the right value. As we went over before, the linebacking corps of Houston is constantly injured, so depth there is crucial. Cliett is a developmental piece for sure, but we’ve seen many players from South Florida develop into solid NFL players in recent years, and he should be no different.
Grade B
. Outside Linebacker

Rice. Christian Covington. 216. player. 10. More depth for the front seven here. Solid value as well, as he most likely would have gone higher had it not been for an injury during his 2014 campaign at Rice. Should project as more of a 3-4 defensive end in Houston’s system rather than a big nose tackle seeing as how he is under 300 pounds. As long as he can get healthy he should contribute as a rotational player and special teamer after a quick stint on the practice squad.
Grade B
. Defensive Tackle

235. player. 10. Kenny Hilliard had a productive career at LSU , at least as productive as he could as part of their committee. Still a good time to take a chance on a flyer in the seventh round. As we’ve seen recently, some of these LSU committee backs have been pretty useful in the league, so why not pair him up with his former counter part Alfred Blue? Could turn into a nice combination with Arian Foster… One thing to keep in mind is Foster is in a contract year. This pick could potentially be the start of the Blue and Hilliard duo in Houston.
Grade B+
. Running Back. Louisiana State. Kenny Hilliard

What a wild and unpredictable draft! Almost all relatively high grades, (minus one pick) across the board.

Three instant starters and a few pieces that can turn into starters by the end of the season…potentially. This division has been heating up fast in the last few years, and it’s only going to get closer. Houston did a great job filling needs with value, arguably the best of any team in the draft this year.
