The Curious Case of Dorial Green-Beckham
Dorial Green-Beckham is one of this year’s most curious prospects. Talent has never been the question when Green-Beckham comes up in discussion, what does is his off the field issues. He has had a long line of run in’s with the police that include burglary, assault and marijuana. Such issues caused him to get dismissed from the University of Missouri after his Sophomore season. Green-Beckham enrolled at the University of Oklahoma but never got to play due to transfer rules.
These issues have turned a top-10 talent into a draft mystery. Most teams do not want to draft a player with such “red flags” no matter the talent, those teams could be sorry. At 6’5 235 lbs Green-Beckham is an imposing figure at wide receiver. He oozes with unbelievable talent out wide, his speed, size and hands are truly special. His draft projection has been all over the place. Some talent evaluators like myself will tell you he’s a bonafide first round pick, while others won’t even consider drafting him.
When I look at Green-Beckham I see a legitimate game changer who can come in and make an impact from Day 1. His size makes him an instant red zone threat, He hauled in 12 touchdowns during his Sophomore year at Missouri. The speed makes him a lethal down field weapon, he ran an official 4.49 at the NFL Combine. His ability to attack the ball in the air is scary and combined with his 6’5 frame it makes it nearly impossible for cornerbacks to defend him. During his Sophomore season Green-Beckham had a four touchdown game against Kentucky, and had two touchdown games against Arkansas State and Auburn. This guy just flat out makes plays.
The off the field issues is what can be concerning. He hasn’t been able to keep himself out of trouble and doesn’t take coaching well. He had a rough up bringing and really has not had much structure in his life, a close-knit NFL organization could really be the best thing that will ever happen to him. Like Randy Moss, nobody wanted to give him another chance but it only takes one NFL team to believe in a player. The Vikings believed in Randy Moss and it changed their franchise around. Green-Beckham has followed a similar path like Moss and possess similar skill sets as the former NFL wide receiver. A team with a no nonsense head coach would be a blessing for DGB.
If your fan of a team with a dysfunctional organization then don’t bother even hoping because that team will not draft Green-Beckham. A team with a strong front office and coaching staff will be in play for DGB. Green-Beckham is playing with a chip on his shoulder to show up all the naysayers. Green-Beckham is a first round talent and someone in this draft is going to get a flat out stud whoever it may be. This guy is going to make NFL teams kick themselves for passing up on him just like they did when Randy Moss entered the league. Get use to hearing the name Dorial Green-Beckham because he may be terrorizing the league for years to come.
