Head coach  Mike Zimmer is steeped in a rich defensive tradition, so he more than anybody understands that a team can never have enough first-rate pass rushers.  Even though his unit had 41 sacks in 2014, the strength of the NFC North offenses compels him to adding more ammunition to his front.

Hence the recent reports that Nebraska defensive end Randy Gregory was paying them a visit prior to the 2015 NFL draft.  In terms of pure talent, most agree the kid is worthy of going in the top 5.  He has those physical traits that are unteachable.  If harnessed by the right scheming and coaching he could become the next star pass rusher in the pros.

Problems center around his character and team needs.

"“Gregory’s draft value is somewhat up in the air after news broke that he tested positive for marijuana at the NFL Scouting Combine.”“Cornerback and offensive tackle would seem to be higher priorities than linebacker for the Vikings, but Gregory’s pass-rush upside — notwithstanding the marijuana issue — is considered one of the best in the draft. Given that Minnesota must play pass-happy division rivals Chicago, Detroit and Green Bay twice each season, adding a pass rusher could appeal to Vikings coach Mike Zimmer.”"

So it comes down to the always competing draft strategies.  Do the Minnesota Vikings approach from a need-based process and look elsewhere or do they think best player available and give their defense a second potential star edge rusher along with Everson Griffen and Anthony Barr?

Time will tell.
