After some rather nerve-wracking waiting it seems the Cleveland Browns are finally starting to make some moves to their much-maligned wide receiver position. Their target? Former Chiefs Pro Bowler Dwayne Bowe who never really got off the ground under Andy Reid.
Provided they succeed, they will have added some instant credibility to their passing attack. Bowe is only 30-years old and still the big, explosive leaper he’s been since his breakout year in 2008 when he scored 15 touchdowns. This gives the Browns a legitimate red zone threat at the very least for whomever ends up being their quarterback. Be it Johnny Manziel, Josh McCown or other. However, it doesn’t solve their overall problem.

Bowe and Brian Hartline are hardly enough compensation to make up for the losses of Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron. Gordon is gone for good — for understandable reasons — but the production will be missed. Cameron is the one that stings more given what he brought to the tight end position. Bowe and Hartline would make excellent complimentary pieces but neither is that go-to guy on money downs when the Browns have to have a completion.
That will have to come either with a trade or more likely in the NFL Draft. Otherwise, they risk the progress they’ve made over the past year being wasted. There is still time but they can’t afford to play it safe.
