The San Francisco 49ers have brought Reggie Bush back to the state of California, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter and several media reports.

Bush was released by the Detroit Lions after spending two seasons with the team. He ran for over 1300 yards with six touchdowns in his tenure in the Motor City. In his nine-year career, Bush has accumulated 5,465 rushing yards and 35 touchdowns.

San Francisco lost their long time starter Frank Gore to the Indianapolis Colts after free agency opened this past week. While they still have second year player Carlos Hyde, the NFL is moving towards a duel running back league. Bush was used to running in a committee system while with his original team, the New Orleans Saints. Bush won a Super Bowl with the Saints in 2009, three years after being drafted second overall in 2006.

After the 2010 season, the Saints traded Bush to Miami for a sixth round pick and safety Johnathon Amaya. Bush spent two seasons in South Beach before signing a free agent contract with the Lions in 2013.

In 2005, Bush won the Heisman Trophy award while at USC. The award was later revoked after his family allegedly accepted gifts, an NCAA violation.

Bush will be facing his former coach, Pete Carroll, when the team faces their rival Seattle Seahawks twice this season.

Here is some insight from NFL Mocks Charles McDonald on what Reggie Bush can bring to the San Francisco 49ers:

"Reggie Bush had arguably the most hype ever for a running back prospect coming into the draft. While he hasn’t materialized into the player everyone thought he would be, he’s made a solid career for himself. His best work has come as a pass catcher out of the backfield."
