NFL Free Agency: Titans, Derrick Morgan Agree to Deal

According to a report from Terry McCormick, the Tennessee Titans and former first round pick Derrick Morgan have agreed to terms on a free agent contract.

McCormick was first on the scene Friday morning as the Titans paired their former first rounder out of Georgia Tech with Brian Orakpo within a matter of minutes.

Our own Charles McDonald (@nfldraftwhiz) worked tirelessly on pre-free agency bios for players, and had this to say about the Titans pass rusher.

More from NFL Mocks

“When the Titans switched to a 3-4 defense there was some concern over how Derrick Morgan would fit into the scheme as a linebacker rushing off the edge. Morgan quelled those concerns with seven sacks, but he had a much greater impact rushing off the edge than those seven sacks show. He generated a ton of pressure off the edge and held up well against the run. The former Georgia Tech product is one of the more underrated defenders in the league and will have a nice impact on his next NFL stop.”

As it turns out, Morgan doesn’t have to go anywhere for his next NFL stop. He was hotly pursued on the open market by teams in need of pass rush, including the Atlanta Falcons, which seemed like a logical logistical fit.

Say that five times fast.

Morgan hasn’t been the elite caliber player some people thought he could be when he was drafted, but he has been solid. He has averaged about six sacks in the last three seasons, but there figures to be plenty more opportunities opening up with Brian Orakpo now lining up opposite him.

This is a great move by the Titans to get him back. They hold the number two pick in the draft, and right now the expectation is that they’ll draft Marcus Mariota, but they could go after Leonard Williams.

GRADE: B+

I like the move for the Titans to get back Morgan at the price they did. You have to find ways to keep your own sometimes and to keep continuity. While Morgan’s not a star, he’s a key piece of the defense so keeping him around is a really solid move.
