NFL Free Agency: Dolphins Snag TE Jordan Cameron

The Miami Dolphins continued their 2015 free agency splurge by signing tight end Jordan Cameron, formerly of the Cleveland Browns, to a two-year contract worth up to $15 million.

The team announced the move on Thursday after it was looking like Cameron might re-sign with the Cleveland Browns.

The former Pro Bowl tight end has struggled with injuries in his NFL career, and our own Geoff Zlobinski (@nfldraftguy215) took a look at his pre-free agency prospects.

“Jordan Cameron had a down year after his breakout season in 2013, in which he caught 80 passes, for 917 yards and 7 touchdowns. In 2014, Cameron only played in 10 games, catching only 24 passes, for a grand total of 424 yards and two touchdowns. Cameron’s dip in numbers can be attributed to learning a new offensive system and inconsistent play at the quarterback position. Cameron proved in 2013 that he can be a very good tight end in this league and with consistent quarterback play, he should be able to regain his form from 2013 very quickly.”

The fit for Cameron in Miami is really intriguing. They placed the transition tag on TE/FB/H-back Charles Clay and apparently don’t intend to rescind that. With Clay as the guy moving around the formation so much, the Dolphins obtain yet another here in Cameron in a guy who can play in-line or out wide as a receiver.

It’s a really intriguing fit too when you consider the development of Ryan Tannehill, who is rapidly ascending at this point in his career. The Dolphins are still hurting at wide receiver, but there are guys like Jarvis Landry who show promise. Having a couple of ultra-athletic tight ends and being able to create mismatches like that is a really fun prospect for the Dolphins, who are making a splash once again on the market.

GRADE: B

This is a really interesting move to me because of the possibilities that Cameron provides. At two years, $15 million, I think he’s over-priced pretty significantly.
