Shane Vereen To Sign with Giants: Grade, Analysis

The New York Giants want to bolster their offense — they may have taken a step in the right direction on Friday. Ian Rapoport of NFL Media is reporting that the team is planning to sign RB Shane Vereen, taking another running back off the NFL Free Agency market.

Here’s the initial report from Rapoport on Twitter:

Not a bad move for a team that is in desperate need for another spark on the offensive side of the ball. If this deal goes through, it’ll work for both sides.

Here’s a breakdown of Vereen, via our NFL Mocks database:

"Vereen has been a source of underrated firepower for the Patriots for the past several seasons. The veteran back has plenty of gas left in the tank, and should be able to help any team that decides to take a chance on him. Don’t be surprised to see him get a decent amount of money from a potential contender."

Much of Vereen’s success has come from catching the ball out of the backfield, something the Giants may be able to take advantage of. Not only can he pound the rock, he can be a versatile playmaker who ultimately shows up when needed.

Grade: A

Not much not to like here. The Giants clearly wanted to add another weapon in the backfield — Vereen can be just that. Don’t be surprised to see him thrusted into a major role right away.

If Eli Manning and Co. want to win now, they’ll use Vereen as much as they can to get the ball rolling in 2015.
