Indianapolis Colts Reportedly Sign Trent Cole: Reaction and Grade

It’s officially official — the Indianapolis Colts will be signing pass-rusher Trent Cole, via Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network.

Here’s the tweet from Rapoport that sent Colts fans on Twitter into full party mode:

Short and sweet, but Indianapolis fans won’t mind. This signing may fly under the radar, but devoted NFL fans know how much Cole can mean to a team’s defense.

UPDATE: Reports now conflicting. It appears nothing has been made official yet. We’ll pass along more once confirmed.

Here are some notes on the former Eagle via Charles McDonald of our great NFL Mocks staff:

"Trent Cole has been one of the star players on the Eagles defense over the past decade. He still turned in a productive pass rushing season with seven sacks and a ton of hurries and hits. Cole was productive against the run as well. Even though he’ll turn 33 during the 2015 season he still has plenty left in the tank. Cole will bring leadership and pass rushing ability to his next team."

As McDonald says, Cole is a prodiction machine. While he is getting up there in age, there’s no reason to believe he can’t bring a stable presence to the defense. His leadership ability is unquestioned, as is his ability to make big plays in big spots.

Grade: B+

Let’s ignore the age for a minute. Cole is a significant pickup that Jim Irsay and his staff should be praised for. Despite the knocks, the former Philadelphia standout should have enough in the tank to make an impact in Indianapolis.
