NFL Free Agency: CB Cary Williams Chooses Seahawks
According to a report, former Baltimore Ravens and Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Cary Williams will choose the Seattle Seahawks as his next destination. Williams will, on paper, take the place of soon to be departed Byron Maxwell, who is signing with the Eagles, ironically.
Here is the original report from Aaron Wilson on Twitter.
Our Charles McDonald has been relentlessly working on free agent profiles this offseason, and had this to say about Williams.
“Cary Williams has been oft-criticized throughout his NFL career — some of it warranted, some of it not. While he was exposed on the big time stages in Philadelphia last season, Williams has shown that he can be an above average cornerback during his time in Baltimore. The former seventh round pick from Washburn University has filled out a nice NFL career for himself — he won’t kill you on defense if he has solid talent on defense surrounding him. The 30 years old still has a few productive seasons left in him.”
Williams will now play in Seattle, where his limitations will likely be diminished due to the fact that he’ll be playing with Earl Thomas, Kam Chancellor, and Richard Sherman. In Philadelphia, he had very little adequate safety help and as a result, the signing of Williams to the Eagles turned out to be a bit of a bust.
GRADE: B
I think this is a nice gamble by the Seahawks, taking a chance on a guy who was once considered a rising star to play in their vaunted defense. If you’re the Seahawks, you have to think that whatever player you add to this unit is automatically going to have his game elevated.
