Colts Sign Todd Herremans; Grade and Analysis

Sunday morning the Indianapolis Colts struck a deal with longtime Eagles guard Todd Herremans on a one year, 3.5 million dollar deal.

ESPN NFL Insider Adam Caplan broke the news around 11:30 Sunday morning:

Here’s some information on Herremans via the NFL Mocks staff:

"Herremans has been with the Eagles since 2005 as a 4th round pick out of Saginaw Valley State. Chip Kelly let him go after ten seasons with the team as he tries to bring in players that fit in with his new vision for the Eagles franchise. Over the years, Herremans has been one of the better run blocking guards in the league while being solid in pass protection. For a team looking for a quick, one or two year fix at offensive guard, Herremans wouldn’t be a bad option for them."

This a good fit for both Herremans and the Colts. Herremans gets to spend one of the closing years of his career with a team who already has an elite quarterback in place (Andrew Luck) — meaning he won’t be wasting the backend of his career with a bottom-feeding team. This is a good deal from the Colts perspective as they have really struggled to run the ball in recent memory — the addition of Herremans should be an immediate boost in that department.

Grade: B

A one year deal for a 32 year old guard (33 in October) makes a lot of sense for both sides. Spending 3.5 million on a quick upgrade with the amount of cap space they have is a great move. The Colts can draft a young guard late in April’s draft to groom behind Herremans. General Manager Ryan Grigson did a good job to help shore up an Indianapolis offensive line that was shaky in 2014.
