Bills Re-Sign Jerry Hughes: Full Grade and Analysis
By Joe Wedra
Another day is here — newsflash: it’s another day that the Buffalo Bills got a whole lot better. The team reportedly re-signed EDGE guy Jerry Hughes on Sunday afternoon, a move that looks to potentially seriously shore up the Buffalo front-seven heading into 2015.
Here’s the report from PFT:
The Bills didn’t lose this one. Here’s what our Charles McDonald had to say about Hughes’ skills and upcoming future:
"Jerry Hughes looked like a bust while he was playing for the Colts, but he seems to have found a home on the Bills talented defensive line. He’s tallied 19.5 sacks over the past two seasons and is one of the better pass rushers in the NFL. He has certainly corrected his image as a first round pick in 2010 but I have some concerns about Hughes. He has been blessed to play on arguably the most talented defensive line in the NFL. Kyle Williams, Marcell Dareus, and Mario Williams are all studs in their own right. Just a little buyer beware that Hughes didn’t produce until he had 3 potential All-Pros playing on the same line as him."
Flaws are there, but there’s no doubt that the Bills got better by making this move.
GRADE: A
There’s no reason to believe Buffalo isn’t extremely happy about this one. Hughes is a guy that has gotten better with each year that has passed. He’ll need to continue his dominance, but don’t expect that to be a problem.
With many question marks surrounding the Bills’ defense, this move was a very safe one and quite frankly important to the team’s success.
Free Agency hasn’t started, but the Bills are getting a head-start as being one of our “on paper winners” once all is set in stone.
