Texans Re-sign Derek Newton; Grades and Analysis
Offensive line chemistry is extremely important to success in the NFL. The Texans made sure their offensive line would stay in intact when they resigned free agent offensive tackle Derek Newton to a five year deal — a move that will be crucial for the team’s success as they go through a mini overhaul on offense in 2015.
ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter broke the news Saturday afternoon on Twitter.
Here’s a little background info on what Derek Newton will continue to bring to the Texans’ offense via the NFL Mocks staff.
"Derek Newton is a solid offensive tackle in the NFL. The former Arkansas State product possesses great athletic ability for an offensive lineman which makes him extremely effective in Houston’s zone blocking scheme. He’s a great run blocker as evidenced by his +13.4 run blocking grade by Pro Football Focus. While he is good in the run game, his pass protection leaves some to be desired. He only gave up two sacks last season, but that’s not indicative of the amount of pressure he allowed in the backfield on a week in, week out basis. Newton is a solid offensive lineman still in his prime — something teams will always covet."
Like the Doug Free signing, the Texans are keeping their offensive line intact which is always a good move. As the Texans deal with Arian Foster’s injuries and the potential breaking in of a new quarterback, offensive line play was going to be essential for the team’s 2015 outlook.
Grade: B-
While Newton is a solid offensive lineman, a five year commitment to him seems a bit long. He’s an above average offensive lineman — usually players of his caliber don’t see long term contracts like this. This grade may make more sense as the contract details are revealed.
Update:
Ian Rapoport released the contract information on Newton’s deal.
That’s a lot of money for a player of Newton’s skill level. I’m going to have to dock the Texans for this one a little bit
Updated Grade: C
