CB Byron Maxwell Free Agency Fits: Falcons, Eagles, Jaguars

facebooktwitterreddit

Free agent cornerback Byron Maxwell of the Seattle Seahawks has benefitted in a major way from playing in the vaunted Legion of Boom, but as a free agent prospect, he’s a great player in his own right, and will get a shot to be a big money star with a new NFL team.

The question is, what team will that be?

Lucky for Maxwell, he has plenty of options, as there is no shortage of teams looking for a solid starting cornerback for their defense. I took the liberty of finding three teams that I believe would be a great fit to add Maxwell in terms of the scheme fit, coaching fit, and (of course) financial fit — and if what I came up with holds true, Maxwell should get ready to head East.

Atlanta Falcons

Why the Atlanta Falcons? Well, in addition to needing some more help in the secondary, the Falcons recently hired Maxwell’s defensive coordinator in Dan Quinn to be their head coach. The Falcons also have money to spend this offseason on upgrading the defensive side of the football.

Already with Robert Alford and Desmond Trufant secured, the Falcons would be adding Maxwell as an upgrade to Alford and giving themselves a talented trio of young cornerbacks with which to work. The connection here is mainly between Maxwell and  Quinn, who did a fantastic job helping to develop Maxwell and putting him into the best situation to succeed along with Richard Sherman after he replaced Brandon Browner.

I like this fit, and think the Falcons would be doing really well to get Maxwell in the fold.

Jacksonville Jaguars

The Jaguars are a good fit for Maxwell for similar reasons as the Falcons. They, like Atlanta, have a head coach that is a former Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator in Gus Bradley, and also have a dire need in the secondary. Perhaps more than even the Falcons, the Jaguars ranked among the worst teams in the league last year in pass coverage and could really use an upgrade in the form of the former Seahawks defender.

They also are among the league leaders in cap space this offseason, so the Jaguars could afford to bring in Maxwell at the big money contract number he feels he deserves.

Philadelphia Eagles

Did any cornerback have a worse year last year than Bradley Fletcher? Okay, let’s not be too harsh on the former Hawkeye, but in all seriousness, the Eagles need an upgrade at the cornerback position and it’s already been rumored that they will have interest in Maxwell.

This is a fit that makes sense for all the same reasons as the other teams, except for the fact that Maxwell wouldn’t be going to play for a coach that he had in Seattle, which oddly enough could be a determining factor if all the money is the same.

The Eagles need upgrades all over in the secondary, so adding Maxwell would be a solid start.
