4th Round

47. Bill Belichick likes smart football players more than purely talented ones.  DeAndre Smelter has both.  He’s 6’3″ with long arms, huge hands and understands all the details of running routes and creating good position against physical defensive backs.  He’s a great athlete on top of it.  The problem?  He tore his ACL.  Combine that with limited action in a triple-option offense at Georgia Tech and he’s a mid-round gamble with big upside.. WR. Georgia Tech. DeAndre Smelter. 98. player

47. The infamous Scouting Combine wonder who shattered the broad jump record!  There is no question Byron Jones is a terrific athlete with an explosive lower body, good size and a clean rap sheet in terms of character questions.  What holds him back is questions of his speed and a season-ending shoulder injury at Connecticut.  Still, given his athleticism and intelligence, he is another one of those Patriot types.. CB. UConn. Byron Jones. 128. player

6th Round

Robert Myers. 162. player. 47. A poor Combine and questions about his athleticism and conditioning will hurt Robert Myers on draft day but the New England Patriots are a good enough team to recognize his value.  He’s a technically-sound prospect who shows that few things slip past him in terms of what defenses are trying to throw his way.  Pass protection is his strength.  Those are some definite things to work with.. OG. Tennessee State

7th Round

SS. LSU. Ronald Martin. 194. player. 47. Late round picks are about taking gambles on high talent-low character players or special teams help.  Ronald Martin would make up more of the latter.  The LSU safety is physical and shows a fire and leadership to get teammates going.  Such traits make excellent members of the third phase.  Beyond that?  He has intriguing size and is good in run support.  Certainly long-term potential.
