Florida State QB Jameis Winston had quite an interesting career with the Noles. Below, read a full 2015 NFL Draft scouting report with projections and more.
Winston was plagued with horrible off the field issues. He continued to show that he lacks maturity away from the football field. His resume of off-field issues include an alleged sexual assault, shoplifting from a grocery store and use of profanity in his school’s cafeteria.
Although it is early in the draft process, Jameis Winston looks like Tampa Bay’s pick in the draft. Let’s take a look at what makes Winston the right pick for the Buccaneers at number one.
Physical Tools
Looking at the eye test alone, Winston has the physical tools of a franchise QB. He was measured in at 6’3 6/8 and weighed in at 231 lbs.
No, Jameis is not fat.
Winston has the height and built to withstand hits from the pocket. He’s big, has a strong arm and is athletic even though his combine 40 time doesn’t indicate that.
Winston stands tall in the pocket and is not afraid to take a hit. His body type allows him to break tackles in the pocket because he is so tough to bring down. Jameis moves very well in the pocket, he eludes defenders, can roll out to either side, can step up and fire the ball all around the field.
For those who do not believe in Winston’s athletic ability, this play will tell you otherwise.
Football IQ
Winston separates himself from most quarterbacks thanks to his strong football IQ. On the field, Winston’s mind works magic. Scouts have been enamored by his high level of football smarts.
Here’s a quote from an NFL executive talking to Bleacher Report’s Mike Freeman:
"“I think he’s probably the smartest player I’ve ever interviewed,” he told me."
Winston showed the ability in college to change plays on the fly according to what the defense was running. It may not show by the stupidity off the field, but he can be labeled as “brilliant” once he hits the field. He should have no problems absorbing NFL terminology and should pick things up fast.
