NFL Scouting Combine: Phillip Dorsett Fails To Topple Chris Johnson
By Erik Lambert
Make no mistake. Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Phillip Dorsett is fast. Really fast. He showed as much during the NFL scouting combine when he posted a 4.33 time in the 40-yard dash. That is going to help his draft stock — However, the hopes that he might be the one to threaten the current combine record of 4.24 set by running back Chris Johnson in 2008 is over.
Running backs and corners are still to come but most feel it was Dorsett who was the biggest threat. So, perhaps not the fireworks fans were hoping for. But rest assured, coaches and scouts couldn’t care less about the record.
They are happy Phillip Dorsett is as fast as his tape hints at and it almost certainly puts him in to play for a spot in the top-100 this spring once the 2015 NFL Draft rolls around
Here are a few other interesting notes on the wide receivers that took the field in Indianapolis in the first group:
- Dorial Green-Beckham is 6’5”, 239 lbs and posted a 4.49 in the dash.
- Rashad Greene made himself some money by showing more speed than initially thought at a 4.47. Already a good route runner, this clears the picture for coaches.
- Initially believed to not be blazing fast, Chris Conley of Georgia came out of nowhere with a 4.35 time. At 6’2” with almost 34 inch arms and good-sized hands, he is looking like a major sleeper.
- Unfortunately Davaris Daniels, who was part of an academic scandal at Notre Dame, needed to help his stock to gain some attention since he didn’t play in 2014. A 4.62 won’t help. His stock is now in serious question.
