Strengths: Josh Harper is a quick receiver who can find the soft spots in zone defense. He produced back-to-back 1,000 yard seasons and scored 29 receiving touchdowns. His declining touchdown totals can be attributed to losing Derek Carr to the NFL. He is a good red-zone target on fade routes, having the ability to jump and contest for balls.
Weaknesses: Harper’s combine measurements show that his hand span is below the league average, which may or may not trouble interested teams.
He missed eight games his sophomore season; the opener with a hamstring and seven games with a sports hernia, which would later require season-ending surgery.
Expect teams to question his route running as well.
As a blocker, he can either produce or under-perform. He has a tendency to try to take out the legs of defenders, which could become dangerous in the NFL.
Records/Awards: 17 receptions tied the school single-season record. Here are some more notes on his career at Fresno State from CBS Sports:
"Harper’s 79 receptions for 1,011 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior ranked third among Fresno’s wideouts in 2013. That certainly wasn’t the case this past season with Davante Adams and Isaiah Burse moving on. Harper led the Bulldogs with 86 grabs for 1,072 yards in 2014 — a full 55 catches and (665 yards) more than Fresno’s next best receiver."
Pro Comparison: Terrence Williams
Draft Projection: Harper is expected to fall due to his route running and questionable durability. Expect him to be taken in the late fourth round or possibly the fifth. He’ll need to interview well this week in Indianapolis to solidify a great stock.
