Sep 1, 2014; Louisville, KY, USA; Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Phillip Dorsett (4) runs the ball against the Louisville Cardinals during the second quarter of play at Papa John

At one point in time it was all about the Calvin Johnson type receivers. The behemoths at 6’4” or 6’5” who towered over defensive backs that quarterbacks could just throw the ball up to. However, a significant shift has taken place thanks to the ascent of Antonio Brown and T.Y. Hilton, smaller but faster and more agile receivers who force defenses to play soft coverages.

This opens the door for similar types in the 2015 NFL draft. One to keep an eye on is Phillip Dorsett out of Miami (Fl.). Where does this Hurricane stand? Here is a scouting report.

STRENGTHS

Let’s face it. He will scare defenses to death because not only does he have game-changing speed but also enough agility and aware to get himself open. On top of that, he can shift down into the slot and shows no fear about going after the ball knowing he might take a hit.

He shows the body control to adjust to the football and make catches along the sideline, dragging his feet and also the hands to ensure the ball doesn’t move.

He has that sense of how to get open, not just deep but on crossing routes.  He isn’t helped by quarterbacks who fail to get it to him consistently.  He always shows that knack for catching the ball and ability to weave his way through traffic with a mix of speed and quickness, using blockers to his advantage.

WEAKNESSES

It’s something that can’t be helped. For all the good Dorsett can do with his speed, it won’t change the fact he’s small by NFL standard. A good hit from a bigger defender has a chance to really tear him loose.  That also lends to his inability to break many tackles.  Oh sure, he’ll break ankles with those juke moves, but if a defender gets his hands on him, it’s over.

He is a willing blocker, make no mistake. Unselfish in that regard but his size, frame and lack of serious power make him a liability in this department.

His hands aren’t perfect nor is his concentration, which has led to some untimely drops on what would’ve been big plays.  That can get better with time, but coaches need to stay on him about it.

Draft Stock

There is absolutely no question that several teams have their eye on Phillip Dorsett in the 2015 NFL draft. His speed alone will garner it, never mind his athleticism and agility. However, his size and lack of bulk are almost sure to drop him down the board. He has that look of going somewhere between the late 2nd to early 4th round range.
