Jaelen Strong: 2015 NFL Draft Scouting Report
Jaelen Strong, Arizona State’s standout receiver, is certainly a first-round option in the 2015 NFL Draft. Read a scouting report below, including video and projected draft stock.
Summary: Jaelen Strong has the hands and the deceptive speed to become a number one option on most NFL teams. At 6’4”, he towers over most defensive backs and can pull down almost every ball above his head. The Philadelphia native originally attended Pierce Junior College after only receiving three offers (Eastern Michigan, Villanova, and VMI). In his two years at Arizona State, Strong recorded 17 touchdowns, compiled 2,287 yards receiving yards, and averaged 88 yards per game.
Strengths: Strong has the ability to become a team’s vertical threat at any point in the game. He contests for every deep ball thrown, and usually catches anything thrown high. Because of his size, he draws a lot of jump balls and has the arm length to reach around defenders. He plays mainly outside, and is used in a lot of bubble screens. As a blocker, he stays aggressive down-field and helps his teammates produce big yardage.
He excels in catching back-shoulder throws along the sidelines, making up for his lack of separation.
Weaknesses: He creates very little separation for himself, leading to pass deflections from defenders.
His long strides can cause him to lose speed in the open field. Strong suffered a concussion during the 2014 season, costing him the next game. He still needs to work on his technique to gain a quicker release on press coverage. He does not possess enough speed to break away from guys downfield.
Records/Awards: Recorded 82 receptions in his final season, ranked third in Arizona State history for single season; school records for career touchdowns
Pro Comparison: Marques Colston
Draft Projection: Strong is likely to turn heads late in the first round, but I see him being taken early in the second round.
