Report: Marcus Mariota, Jameis Winston to Throw at Combine
In a bit of a stunning development, both of this year’s top quarterbacks in the 2015 NFL Draft — Oregon’s Marcus Mariota and Florida State’s Jameis Winston — will throw in the Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.
Consider things significantly “amped.”
Having one Heisman Trophy winner participate in the Combine would have been excellent, but having two is double the fun. And why wouldn’t these guys throw? Well Sayre, it’s a terrible business decision for a variety of reasons. They could throw bad, they could look bad on national TV, they might overthrow receivers they’ve never thrown too. They could look uncomfortable and rattled.

Guess what? I do not care.
It’s become such a trend in recent years for quarterbacks at the top of the draft to skip throwing at the Combine that we’ve had some really awful quarterbacks skipping for no reason, because they’re not good. These quarterbacks could go first and second in the draft this year, and I love that they are throwing for no other reason than just to compete.
Everyone knows that QBs will struggle to find instant chemistry with receivers at the Combine. That’s not news at all. What could you possibly do at the Combine that would hurt your stock? Any NFL team that puts any serious stock into your completion percentage or something like that from the Combine should pass on you because they’re looking for a reason not to take you.
In short, I am really impressed by the decisions these guys have made to throw this year. It shows their competitiveness and that they’re not afraid of the big spotlight. The quarterbacks are expected to work out at the Combine on Saturday.
You can bet the NFL is happy about the significant increase in viewers from these two announcements.
