North Dakota State RB John Crockett NFL Draft Scouting Report

As the North Dakota State football program has continued its dominance at the FCS level as well as shock FBS opponents annually, the Bison are sending a running back named John Crockett to the NFL that has big play potential and stands out in a class full of great backs.

Crockett isn’t being talked about that much right now, but you can bet NFL teams know exactly who this guy is. At 6-0, 200 pounds, Crockett is a really interesting case at the running back position who just finished off a senior season where he exploded statistically with 1,994 rushing yards on a whopping 368 carries with 21 touchdowns, and he also emerged as a receiver by catching 30 passes.

The former Bison star showed off his entire skill set this past season, and proved to NFL scouts that he not only deserves a shot in the league, but he deserves to be drafted and thrust into a rotation.

Let’s take a look at Crockett and what he brings to the table as a prospect.

When I watch Crockett, I see a back that plays with patience. He lets his blocks develop, and he knows when to turn on the jets. He has quick feet and makes decisive cuts, displaying excellent vision downfield while always churning his legs and moving forward.

Playing in a pro-style offense at NDSU will help him transition to the NFL, especially in terms of pass protection and third down responsibilities. Crockett emerged in 2014 in terms of his receiving skills and looks like he can be an every-down back in the NFL.

Not to be overlooked is Crockett’s deep speed, which was on display this past year on a big run against the Iowa State Cyclones. Crockett sprinted past every level of defense on a well-designed run for 80 yards and a touchdown.

Crockett is also known for having a strong work ethic and for giving 110 percent on every play, and that’s evident when you watch him. I think he has the upside to be a capable starting back when called upon but will be best fit in a rotation with another back where he can come in and spell someone for a couple of series per game.

He should have a very nice NFL career.
