Best Pick – Trent Williams, OT, 5th Overall in 2010
Trent Williams has brought attitude and skill to the Redskins offensive line. He is one of the best players in the league at his position, and he plays with a mean streak that is fun to watch. He seems to have gotten better every year, and has three Pro Bowl selections to his credit.
He’s one of the few early round selections that have gone completely right for the Redskins.
Other selections considered:
Sean Taylor, S, 5th Overall in 2004
Brian Orakpo, DE/LB, 13th Overall in 2009
Ryan Kerrigan, DE/LB, 16th Overall in 2011
Alfred Morris, RB, 173rd Overall in 2012
Worst Pick – Robert Griffin III, QB, 2nd Overall in 2012
Based on a production standpoint, Robert Griffin isn’t a colossal bust (yet), but the Redskins gave up a disgusting amount of picks to obtain him. Two extra first rounders to the Rams have put the Redskins in a hole recently, as Griffin just hasn’t panned out.
Things looked good early on. In his first season threw for 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns, and only 5 picks while racking up 815 yards on the ground on his way to Rookie of the Year honors.
Then the knee injury took over. RG3 injured his knee in a game against the Ravens on a brutal hit delivered by Haloti Ngata. He tried to rebound from that injury, but a visit by the Seahawks in the playoffs that year ended any hope of that. Griffin hurt his knee on a non-contact play and many questioned then-head coach Mike Shanahan if Griffin should’ve even played in the game.
Looking back, it’s fair to question whether that game versus the Seahawks was worth jeopardizing Griffin’s career, as they weren’t likely to win the Super Bowl regardless. Griffin hasn’t been the same since his rookie season, struggling mightily in the starting lineup.
Other selections considered:
Jason Campbell, QB, 25th Overall in 2005
LaRon Landry, S, 6th Overall in 2007
Devin Thomas, WR, 34th Overall in 2008
