Should the New York Jets Draft Jameis Winston?
By Joe Wedra
There’s just something about the New York Jets that we can’t stop talking about. Sure, having Rex Ryan lead the way of any team makes for interesting conversation, but there’s always an element of surprise surrounding Gang Green. Now, with a new head coach coming, there’s a new chapter of the Jets story that needs to be talked about. It’s possible that 2015’s element of surprise comes in the 2015 NFL Draft with former Florida State QB Jameis Winston.
In a division with a New England Patriots team that could be going on the decline in a few short years, the Buffalo Bills, and the never-certain Miami Dolphins, the Jets are just a few pieces of the puzzle away from becoming legitimate future contenders in the AFC East. The national media won’t admit it, but this team isn’t as far out as many believe.

Rex Ryan is officially out of a job, leaving the Jets brass some tough decisions as we approach the offseason. One thing is certain: a change at quarterback is needed and will come.
The days of Geno Smith and Michael Vick appear to be finished, despite how highly-entertaining they were at the time. A change needs to be made under center – one that might just bring a whole lot of interest to a large group of folks in the Big Apple.
Winston lost in an ugly Rose Bowl game last night, but he didn’t have a stock-changing performance himself.
There’s no lack of controversy with the former college standout. However, Winston’s on-field skills may trump the issues, potentially making the decision an easy one.
It’s no secret that Jet fans (or the entire NY media market, if we’re being honest) can’t endure the team’s failure for much longer. The organization must find a way to light a fire under the fan base. Why can’t the former Seminole be that driving force?
If it happens, it’s possible the team may have have to wait to actually build the offense around Winston. He can be a franchise-changing QB, but the next New York GM would be wise to construct a unit around Winston – one that best suits his strengths.
Of course, any move the orgaization makes will be rendered useless if they don’t do something about the glaring need at the wide receiver position. Chris Johnson may have shown enough this season for the team to feel secure at running back, but the holes at wide-out are too important to simply glance over.
One of the only aspects of this potential move that we know for sure is Winston’s projection at the next level. Despite first-half meltdowns and some mechanical flaws, scouts should grade the former Seminole out as a first-round pick that can be thrown into a starting role immediately.
The need for a starting quarterback in this league is too significant for a team to pass up on a difference-maker; and it’s safe to say the Jets do indeed fall under that category.
