Wild Card NFL Predictions: Detroit Lions at Dallas Cowboys

facebooktwitterreddit

Things are going to get crazy between the Detroit Lions and Dallas Cowboys on wild card weekend.  What do the NFL predictions say?

Subplots:

Henry Melton loss will hurt Cowboys pass rush

The pass rush has really saved the Dallas defense over the past month and been a big reason the team was able to lock up the NFC East.  However, a key part of that resurgence in defensive tackle Henry Melton is out for the year.  His interior presence was significant, and without it the Cowboys will have that much harder of a time getting to Matthew Stafford.

Ndamukong Suh appeal affects DeMarco Murray

On the other side, the Lions caught another break when Ndamukong Suh avoided a suspension in an appeal, having to pay a huge fine instead.  Having him up front will be so important for the Detroit run defense which has been among the best in the league.  Without him they never would’ve stood a chance at stopping rushing champion DeMarco Murray.

Key Matchups:

Ndamukong Suh vs. Zach Martin

A name that isn’t in the Rookie of the Year conversation but should be is Zach Martin.  The Notre Dame offensive lineman has become a huge addition for the Dallas Cowboys, turning their front into the league’s best.  However, he’ll have his hands full against Suh, who has a reputation for having good games against rookies who aren’t prepared for his brand of nastiness.  Martin probably won’t be overwhelmed, but he can’t afford too many mistakes.

Brandon Carr vs. Calvin Johnson

The Detroit Lions executed a huge comeback over the Cowboys in their last meeting because Dallas had no answer for  Calvin Johnson.  He finished that game with a record 14 catches for 329 yards and a touchdown.  As improved as the Cowboys have been in 2014, it’s still the same cast of corners who have to stop Megatron, with Brandon Carr being among those who will cover him most.

Pick:  DET 26, DAL 24

The irony of this game is that it perfectly suits the Lions.  It’s indoors just like their home stadium at Ford Field and to top it off the Cowboys have been at their best on the road this season.  Conversely they are a pedestrian 4-4 at home.
